Lisa M. Halvorson, M.D.

Lisa M. Halvorson, M.D., has been named the new Chief of the Gynecologic Health and Disease Branch (GHDB), effective June 15, 2014, announced Dr. Catherine Spong, M.D., Director of the Division of Extramural Research.

Dr. Halvorson is a highly experienced physician and scientist in the areas of gynecology and reproductive endocrinology, basic science research techniques, clinical trials and evidence-based medicine. She comes to the NICHD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where she is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Halvorson has received independent grant funding from NIH and served on the NIH Integrative and Clinical Endocrinology and Reproduction Study Section. Her recent research has focused on the neuroendocrine control of reproduction and the molecular mechanisms that trigger the onset of fertility and contribute to its end during menopause.

“Dr. Halvorson’s experience in clinical gynecology, basic science research, administration, and mentorship of young scientists—as well as her strong connections to professional societies and history of professional service—will be particularly useful for supporting ongoing work in GHDB and for helping to further define the direction and focus of this new branch,” Dr. Spong said.
