Grants Management Branch (GMB)

Close-up of a hand pointing to a bar graph displayed on a computer monitor.GMB performs management, internal control, and acquisition functions for all NICHD grant programs, negotiating and issuing more than $1 billion in grants and other funding mechanisms annually.

Staff in GMB work closely with scientific program staff to ensure that NICHD and its grantees meet all legal, regulatory, and policy requirements. They also direct all business-related activities associated with NICHD awards, from leading proposal review and approval, to obligating and tracking NICHD funds.

Administration of traditional funding mechanisms, such as grants and cooperative agreements, helps provide funding stability for the institute’s research portfolio. Other Transaction Authority (OTA) and other mechanisms, also managed through GMB, allow flexibility so NICHD can easily pivot, expand, and modify efforts to meet programmatic needs and attract applicants with nontraditional expertise.

The branch also contributes to the development of policies and procedures and helps interpret NIH and HHS policies related to funding programs and management.
