Biosketch of Director for the Division of Population Health Research, Division of Intramural Research

Una Grewal, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Una Grewal headshot.Dr. Una Grewal was named director of the Division of Population Health Research in December 2021. She has served as the acting director of the division, formerly called the Division of Intramural Population Health Research, since February 2020. Previously, she had served as the division’s deputy director since 2013. The division was renamed and moved within the Division of Intramural Research in 2021.

Dr. Grewal’s primary research focuses on fetal growth and pregnancy outcomes (e.g., labor and delivery, gravid disorders, intrauterine growth restriction, congenital anomalies), especially in relation to maternal nutrition. She is a co-investigator for the NICHD Fetal Growth Study and heads up the nutrient and supplement intake component for the study, which she developed with extramural funding from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. In addition, she serves as co-principal investigator for the Consortium on Safe Labor and as an associate investigator on the Fetal 3D Study.

Dr. Grewal received her bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Smith College and earned both her master’s degree in public health and her doctorate in epidemiological sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She joined NICHD in 2007 as a staff scientist.
