Overview
Healthcare providers and families face significant challenges in making care decisions for extremely preterm infants. They make decisions about individual infants based on each infant’s situation and using the best available information at the time. Through its research, NICHD aims to better inform healthcare providers and families about the health, survival, and development of infants born extremely preterm.
The Neonatal Research Network (NRN), supported through NICHD’s Pregnancy and Perinatology Branch, was established in 1986 to improve the care and outcomes of neonates, especially very-low-birth weight and extremely preterm infants, through research.
The information on this website describes outcomes based on standardized assessments for infants born at NRN centers between 2006 and 2012 and validated in Vermont Oxford Network hospitals between 2006 and 2016. VON offers access to up-to-date hospital-specific survival estimates for participating hospitals and other publicly available data through the VON member website at https://nightingale.vtoxford.org (registration required).
PLEASE NOTE: Information from this website is not intended to be the only basis for making care decisions for an individual infant, nor is it intended to be a definitive means of predicting infant outcomes. Users should keep in mind that every infant is an individual, and that factors beyond those described on this website influence infant survival and development.
