Biosketch

Robert Elliott, Ph.D., M.Sc., became deputy chief of SRB in 2025. He has has more than 20 years of peer review experience, gained by serving as a scientific review officer (SRO) at NIH's Center for Scientific Review (CSR). He primarily ran the Bioengineering of Neuroscience and Vision Technologies study section (now Bioengineering and Tissue Engineering for Neuroscience) as well as the F03A fellowship study section. He also served as a referral officer for the Division of Receipt and Referral, a CSR SRO mentor for newly hired SROs, and a member of numerous NIH-wide committees and programs. 

Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Elliott was an instructor of neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School, where he applied DNA microarray technologies to the study of epilepsy-associated changes in gene expression and network reorganization. Subsequently, he conducted research into disease-related neuronal degeneration and regeneration at Biogen-Idec, Inc., in Cambridge, Massachusetts. 

Dr. Elliott holds an M.Sc. in radiation biology from the University of London and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Cornell (now Weill) Graduate School of Medical Sciences in New York City. He trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Irvine and the University of California San Francisco.
