Purpose

The NIH-wide IMPROVE initiative, led by NICHD, the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH), and the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), with participation from multiple NIH institutes, centers, and offices, was established in response to the rising U.S. rates of pregnancy-related deaths. This multipronged, innovative research effort is designed to address maternal mortality and morbidity, including severe maternal morbidity, and improve maternal health before, during, and after pregnancy. IMPROVE activities include a special focus on health disparities and populations disproportionately affected, such as Blacks and African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, Asians and Pacific Islanders, Hispanics/Latinas, very young women and women of advanced maternal age, and people with disabilities.

This anniversary meeting, organized in partnership with ORWH and NINR, brings together the wider maternal health research community and community partners, as well as IMPROVE awardees to recognize the initiative’s accomplishments to date. The event offers participants a chance to share research and discuss possible future directions for the initiative.

Teams from the following IMPROVE programs will also share presentations and perspectives during the meeting:

  • Connecting the Community for Maternal Health Challenge
  • IMPROVE Community Implementation Program
  • Maternal Health Research Centers of Excellence
  • Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx®) Tech for Maternal Health
