Purpose
In 2022, NICHD formed the Stillbirth Working Group of Council in response to an HHS request to lead a congressionally mandated task force to examine stillbirth in the United States. The working group provided a report of its findings to HHS in March 2023, focusing on the current barriers to collecting data on stillbirths throughout the United States, communities at higher risk of stillbirth, the psychological impact and treatment for mothers following stillbirth, and known risk factors for stillbirth.
The NICHD Stillbirth Working Group of Council plans to hold new meetings to continue its efforts to examine stillbirth by examining the following:
- Current knowledge on stillbirth and prevention
- Areas of improvement for data collection
- Current resources for families affected by stillbirth
- Next steps to gather data and lower the rate of stillbirth in the United States
