Purpose
Type 2 diabetes is a relatively new disorder in pediatrics, leaving pediatricians with infrequent exposure and leading to limited, consensus-based management guidelines. In the last few years, however, the results of large epidemiologic and clinical trials have begun to clarify the disorder and provide an evidence base for management. In this lecture, Philip S. Zeitler, M.D., Ph.D., will review what these trials have taught us about the management of type 2 diabetes in youth, as well as the emerging treatment options. During his presentation, Dr. Zeitler will:
- Describe the evidence base for management of glycemic and non-glycemic aspects of type 2 diabetes in adolescents.
- Review the various classes of medications available for treatment of type 2 diabetes in youth.
- Understand the pros and cons of different treatment approaches for type 2 diabetes in youth
Dr. Zeitler is medical director of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Clinical Translational Research Center of the Colorado Clinical Translational Science Institute, chair of the Department of Endocrinology at Children’s Hospital Colorado, and director of the type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome programs.
