Purpose
The NICHD Health Equity Seminar Series is designed to increase awareness of maternal and child health issues that impact diverse populations and serves as a platform to discuss ongoing and future research to reduce disparities in health outcomes related to all NICHD-mission areas.
The goal of this seminar is to highlight research focused on the social and economic consequences of unintended pregnancy, strategies for increasing access to safe and effective contraceptive methods, and factors related to contraceptive behavior among populations at increased risk for unintended pregnancy.
Recent data from the National Survey of Family Growth indicates that more than one-half (51%) of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended. Unintended pregnancies, particularly those leading to unintended births, can have negative consequences such as delayed prenatal care, poor birth outcomes, poor maternal-child relationships, and increased economic burden. Racial and ethnic minority women and low-income women experience notably high rates of unintended pregnancy. Strategies to support increased access to safe and effective contraceptive methods and appropriate use of contraceptive methods are essential for reducing unintended pregnancies and related social and economic consequences among high-risk populations.
