NICHD Scholars Workshop

November 13–14, 2014

Sponsor/Co-Sponsor(s)

Office of Health Equity (OHE), Office of the Director (OD), NICHD; National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities; National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

Location

Clinical Research Center (Building 10), FAES classroom 6, NIH Main Campus, Bethesda, MD

Purpose

The NIH encourages academic institutions to diversify their student and faculty populations and increase the participation of individuals currently underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences. Through the Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research mechanism, NIH-funded investigators can provide training for high school students, pre- and postdoctoral fellows, and investigator level candidates from the following groups:

  • Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Individuals from socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, which inhibited their ability to pursue a career in health-related research

This 2-day retreat will enhance the trainees’ knowledge of research design and will sharpen their skills at creating research grant applications to better equip them for submitting their own research applications. The trainees will also learn about the NIH peer-review process and opportunities for research funding and will explore the NICHD’s scientific challenges and career development opportunities in maternal and child health research. The scholars will also participate in a poster session to share their current research projects.
