The NICHD is one of several NIH Institutes and other federal entities that support and conduct research on neural tube defects. Neural tube defects, including spina bifida, are developmental malformations resulting from abnormal or incomplete closure of the neural tube. The NICHD conducts and supports research on the precursors of neural tube defects and their causes, detection, treatment, and effect on children’s motor and cognitive development.
