How many people are affected/at risk for hypoparathyroidism?

Hypoparathyroidism occurs in about 0.5% to 6.6% of people who have had their thyroid gland totally removed, but these rates vary significantly across hospitals. Rates at endocrine surgical centers that perform large numbers of thyroid surgeries have the lowest rates, between 0.9% and 1.6%.1
