Biosketch:

Dr. Heather Watts, M.D., is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist and maternal-fetal medicine specialist who joined the PAMA Branch in July 1998. Dr. Watts is responsible for research activities in the area of HIV infection and its complications among pregnant and non-pregnant women and the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission. Dr. Watts led the NICHD-sponsored study of neonatal antiretroviral prophylaxis for prevention of transmission in Brazil, Argentina, Bahamas, the United States, and South Africa, showing that two or three drugs provided to infants born to HIV-infected women who had not received treatment during pregnancy reduced transmission compared to standard zidovudine alone. She participates in development and conduct of clinical trials aimed at reducing perinatal HIV transmission and providing optimal treatment for HIV-infected pregnant women, many of which are conducted by the NICHD and NIAID-funded International Maternal, Pediatric, and Adolescent AIDS Clincial Trials Network (IMPAACT). She serves on the Women's Health Internetwork Scientific Committee of the IMPAACT and Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and also advises on several women's health studies in the ACTG. She is the NICHD scientific officer on the Women's Interagency HIV Study, serving on the Executive Committee and several other working groups.  She represents NICHD on the Microbicide Trials Network Executive Committee and assists in development of microbicide trials for pregnant women and adolescents.  She is the NIH representative to the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry and serves on the U.S. guidelines working groups for treatment of HIV-infected pregnant women and prevention of mother to child HIV transmission and on prevention and treatment of opportunistic infections, providing expertise on optimal management of all infections in pregnancy.  Dr. Watts also serves on the Health Care for Underserved Women Committee and the HIV Expert Working Group of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  She also serves as an advisor to the NICHD International Site Development Initiative and the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study, both of which are led by the Maternal and Pediatric Infectious Disease Branch at NICHD.
