Description: A longitudinal investigation of children's knowledge, attitudes and feelings regarding Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) as an illness relative to other health problems and the health consequences of AIDS and other illnesses. Six hundred African-American and Anglo-American elementary school children, equally distributed across grades 1, 3, and 5, and stratified by socioeconomic status and gender, and their primary caretakers, were interviewed individually. They were re-interviewed two years later and risk behaviors for AIDS were assessed in the older children.

Description: SCAN is a longitudinal study of 290 black preschool children, and their families in order to test a model hypothesizing that the CVD risk status of black children is influenced by predisposing factors (e.g., the CVD risk status of an older sibling), and the effects of environmental factors (e.g., day care versus home care) on the child's nutrient intake and activity levels. Similar research was funded at seven other medical centers in the U.S.
