Because of the national movement to provide home and family care rather than institutionalization for persons with IDD, research on family and community issues is of special interest. Research on the processes of mutual influence between persons with IDD and other members of their families or communities is encouraged.
The IDDB supports studies of racial and ethnic influences on family adaptation and community acceptance of IDD and on differential access to health care for those with IDD, including co-morbid conditions in those with IDD.
